And speaking of reality ... if you want to see something that will REALLY wake you up, if you have yet to see the HBO mini-series "Generation Kill," about a Rolling Stone reporter embedded with a U.S. marine recon unit, the hell, ya! Go see it! Finally ... if this play is only 1/2 as good as this playwright is a person ... then this play will be an awesome, thoughtful, experience! This is a play in development, which mean...Exactly! This is a play in development, which means the final product may not end up being what you see at the reading, as part of what the playwright wants is to be present to experience how audiences experience the play to make sure things are landing as she intends.

She'll be there looking at structural issues (not changing the meaning of the play or big plot points or characters), but because this play brings up so many thoughts, we've added social events after each show to give people a chance to talk to each other about what they saw. After the afternoon reading is a "Yeah I Said Feminist" Salon (which we're not widely advertising but which is open to feminists and their supporters—bring a potluck item to share) for people to hash out their reactions in a, oh I hate how touchy-feely "emotionally safe space" sounds, but, you know, a place where everyone feels like they can really dig down on the actual issues instead of being bothered by lame anti-woman rhetoric. After the evening show we have a cocktail party, where I expect the conversation to be just as thorough, but with booze. All of our plays evoke feelings, but this one is really going to start some quality conversations as well.Erin Merritthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02056918610085233827noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5572217105148282544.post-83362645890160903692013-07-12T13:48:03.163-07:002013-07-12T13:48:03.163-07:00"What this play displays is not how women are..."What this play displays is not how women are being held back by the oppressive patriarchy, but how women are held back by other women which I think is a new perspective to an old problem."

Well, the kyriarchy oppresses us all. I think it is a challenge to show how women oppress each other because of the system they are trapped within...how to satirize the system vs. critiquing "women being b*tches." Unfortunately many, many plays, movies and media in general show women as mutually competitive as the default stereotype.

Very intriguing to see how the play handles this.Theotokshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10347779124860949532noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5572217105148282544.post-72980661323928230812013-06-28T13:25:52.671-07:002013-06-28T13:25:52.671-07:00Can't wait! woohoo! Can't wait! woohoo!AndZooeyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12181040669568356143noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5572217105148282544.post-51479057530097369452013-06-27T12:15:56.932-07:002013-06-27T12:15:56.932-07:00No one comments on blogs normally, but I wanted to...No one comments on blogs normally, but I wanted to break my comment virginity.

I went to see Tea Party last year, and was blown away by the quality and professionalism of these marvellous new plays. As you say, their audience is constantly changing, not only because there are different people there every night, but because different parts of a play require different relationships and also because a good play (like this one) changes the audience as they watch it. The key in my mind is not how to "reconcile" that changing audience relationship, because it need not and should not be reconciled. An actor, like a person in real life, is always calibrating that relationship based on what is being said, what the speaker needs, and how the listener is responding. Bertolt Brecht allegedly told his actors not to worry about being consistent from scene to scene, not because people aren't consistent, but because people are complex enough that we can't always see their consistency. If the actor plays the true relationship of any given moment, the audience will hear it as authentic and intuit the underlying consistency if need be. So the question is not "To whom am I speaking?" but "To whom am I speaking right now?" When the actor is able to be specific, the audience can be too.Erin Merritthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02056918610085233827noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5572217105148282544.post-28239082555320754192012-06-27T10:25:17.221-07:002012-06-27T10:25:17.221-07:00(Erin M. here) I love this post, Desdemona, and it...(Erin M. here) I love this post, Desdemona, and it makes me even happier that I'll be around to see part of your process happen in a room near me. I laughed out loud at your impulse to eradicate the past, because I worry that my impulse is too much the opposite. I often discover my strongest impulses in reaction to a piece's history, and I am finding that when I work with a cast and crew someone else hired, I am forced to be more original than I am when I'm working with people I know well. Yes, the work is quicker, and often more fun, when I'm working with people with whom I find a natural resonance, but most of us are hired to work on plays chosen and written by other people, so in some sense we're always charged with bring life to someone else's ideas, and that is more liberating than I had expected. Your post makes me think that the heart of our job (and joy, right?) as directors is to uncover the most potent conversation between that "clean slate" and the "old guard" of our collective past/individual memories.Erin Merritthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02056918610085233827noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5572217105148282544.post-21279645740756062712012-06-18T19:04:06.734-07:002012-06-18T19:04:06.734-07:00If some one can read this and not be inspired they...If some one can read this and not be inspired they are obviously a robot.A robot that reads!jakobhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09811806744174812530noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5572217105148282544.post-13581301109055276362012-06-18T16:10:25.892-07:002012-06-18T16:10:25.892-07:00You didn't read all the plays? If your travels take you anywhere near Yorkshire before the end of September, do let me know. Your suitcase can come & hangout with my suitcase. I tried to "settle down" in Oz and managed to be still for ten months and, for Melbourne, had relatively cheap rent $150 a week. I am training with John Britton before I return to Australia again, to see if I fit in & to find four walls that I can unpack my suitcase within. My best wishes are with you for Hong Kong Dinosaur & your travels. And if anyone else reads this: GO AND SEE IT!!! SHE (OK, SO THE PLAY) IS REALLY GOOD!!
